I lived in Maryland, for just one year (2006-2007). After that, I moved to Virginia and never looked back.

Well, a Virginia Biscuit is when there is a circle jerk around the biscuit. The one who does the deed last has to eat it.

The only reason I ever acknowledged Maryland on family road trips as a kid was because it was always the place with the most heinous traffic. Interstate 95 can be a blessing and a curse.

Interdasting. Really a great idea! I'd love to participate but I'm right in the middle of some financial....crap. Protip: Never get sick enough to need extended hospitalization.
Keep up the great work. People like you keep this great community going strong!

What is "it" exactly?

I'm a Marylander, been here my whole life except for a stint in N. VA.
And since this seems to be a MD vs. VA thread:
People claim MD taxes are high, I don't get re-taxed on my car every year over on this side of the Wilson Bridge though. And Fairfax County police don't measure how low my car is (that happened to a friend of mine, they are pretty nazi'ish about mods).
We have beaches, mountains, and big cities (well one) all within 2 hours of each other and I'll take my 1-acre single family over the townhouse I would have gotten in NOVA for the same price (or something 2 hours South or West of DC in VA). I like it here if you couldn't tell. :)

Lower taxes, for one. More jobs. Less congestion. Less crime.
![]() 12/06/2013 at 09:10 |
|
You say that but I don't miss getting re-taxed on my cars every year. How many years have they been saying that would be phased out?
As for the others, I'd have to see some stats. I'm guessing Baltimore alone would ensure the crime stat is true. haha My townhouse in Alexandria got broken into, haven't ever had any issue with crime in MD for the other 30+ years I've lived there. So from my experience, not so much.

Also, guns. And yeah, baltimore is what I was thinking. haha
As for taxes, we tax cars, but our taxes are lower in pretty much every single category, most notably payroll and corporate taxes. People I know who have moved from MD have had notable increases per paycheck once they switched to VA residency.
For congestion, that is purely anecdotal. But that anecdote comes from driving home every day and hearing on the radio about traffic jams all over the beltway north of the Potomac (I'm looking at you 270) on a daily basis with mention of the VA side of things maybe once or twice a week. We also have the Hot lanes.
You do have crab cakes though, and Annapolis is one of the most lovely places I have ever been. Western Maryland is pretty too.

Yeah Baltimore alone is probably negating my arguement. Although I love going there, the harbor is really nice, Fells Point is a lot of fun.
I've lived in both states in the last decade, can't say it was too drastic. My wife just moved out of NOVA recently before we got married, so I'll ask if she's noticed a difference. We built in Calvert Co. because we work in downtown DC and to get an acre of property with a nice new house meant heading South to Fredericksburg pr West towards Leesburg. And traffic sucks both those directions.
66 and 95 in particular are awful. I'll put those against 270 anyday for total hours of misery. The hot lanes are a big help, the 495 bit near Tysons was always a cluster, that has helped a lot. But I normally hear something about a wreck somewhere near Manassas which is backing people up for miles or 95S traffic in the evening. It's miserable.
My issue with VA is that without the Northern bit, there isn't much. VA Beach and the Norfolk area aren't bad, but it takes awhile to get there. Not much else to be too proud of.
The Eastern Shore of MD is nice, grew up over that way. You can do a day trip down to St. Micheals for lunch, neat little town. Good food.

See I actually grew up in Richmond, so I was about 2 hours from everything. We've got great mountains, which I have spent a lot of time hiking and camping in. I went to school down in Blacksburg. VA Beach and Norfolk are cool. As for real beaches, my family makes the exodus to SC for our beach experiences.
The rest of Virginia is so different from NoVa (and itself even), and I really love it.
Hell, our two states have basically the exact same geography, except ours is bigger and your bay is a bit more fresh than salty, and your ocean front is a bit easier to get to.

Interesting. I haven't spent much time in Richmond, most of what I know is from Elliot in the Morning (syndicated there). I liked VA Beach, it's just so darn hard to get to. I'm amazed at the number of people from DC who trek down there in the summer. Although even more head to OBX which is even further.
Good point about geography, lots of coastline, mountains, flat agricultural area in both states. I grew up in Salisbury, was pretty used to a 20 minute drive to the beach (back roads in the summertime though, 50 is a mess).

You should check it out sometime. It's an interesting city.
